Chocolate avocado protein pudding is an easy way to get healthy fats and protein into your family’s diet!
You can also enjoy this dessert guilt free!
The other thing I love about chocolate avocado pudding is that it is incredibly fast and easy to whip up!
So grab your blender and let’s make a healthy chocolate avocado pudding!
Step-by-Step Directions with Pictures to Make Healthy Chocolate Avocado Pudding
In a blender (I love my Ninja blender!), puree the avocados with the coconut milk.
If you don’t have a blender, you can also use an immersion blender in a tall cup.
And if you have neither of these options, just mash them up SUPER well with a fork.
This is the consistency you will get if you use a blender though – creamy, smooth avocado puree!
Pour the blended avocado into a bowl.
Now add all of the remaining ingredients.
Whisk everything together until it’s combined.
Once everything is well mixed together, now comes the fun part!
TASTE TEST!
Adjust the ingredients if needed.
Depending on how strong the avocado flavor is, I might add a little more cacao powder or a bit more sweetener and salt.
If you like your pudding cold, you will want to chill this for a good hour.
The blender will have added some heat to the mixture, so it will be warm if you eat it right away.
But if that doesn’t bother you, feel free to enjoy right away!
You can serve these in cute little cups or you can eat it straight out of the bowl with a spoon (which is what I do when I’m not making the recipe for the blog, lol).
If you want to add a little crunch or just a cute topping, sprinkle cocoa nibs on top.
Warning – if you have never tried cocoa nibs, they are a bit bitter.
Just don’t want you to be surprised 🙂
Alternative Directions to Make Easy Chocolate Avocado Pudding
Instead of blending the avocado separately and then whisking in the remaining ingredients, you can also just put all of the ingredients together in a blender bowl and puree it in one step.
The reason I whisk everything together is because I like to adjust a lot of the ingredients.
But this does dirty more dishes.
So feel free to dump everything into a blender and save time on dishes!
What Can I Use to Sweeten My Chocolate Avocado Pudding?
Our family prefers to use keto type sweeteners like liquid stevia, erythritol, and erythritol blends such as Lakanto monkfruit sweetener.
So if you follow the keto diet, use one of these sweeteners!
If you are wondering why you should use keto sweeteners even if you don’t strictly follow the keto diet, check out this article from All the Nourishing Things.
And you will want to use a liquid or powdered sweetener over a granular sweetener, otherwise you will have grainy chocolate avocado pudding!!
If you follow a paleo or AIP diet, approved sweeteners for those diets include honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar.
And maybe your family doesn’t use sweeteners at all.
Perhaps you could try adding a ripe banana to naturally sweeten the cacao powder!
Hopefully that gives you some options on how to sweeten your pudding (if it’s even needed – see below!).
How Much Sweetener Should I Use?
The amount of sweetener you might need will depend on if you use the protein powder and what type you use.
If you are using a flavored protein powder, most of them will already have some sweeteners in them.
So if you are using a chocolate protein powder, I would start with no sweetener!
Mine was sweet enough without any sweetener!
But this is why it’s important to taste test and adjust accordingly.
If you are on the AIP diet, using an unflavored protein powder, or if you decide not to use any protein powder, you will definitely want to sweeten the pudding.
These are the sweetener amounts that I would start with:
- 20 drops of liquid stevia,
- 2 Tablespoons powdered erythritol or Lakanto monkfruit (or other powdered sweetener),
- OR 2 Tablespoons honey or maple syrup
Keep in mind that these are VERY CONSERVATIVE.
Most other recipes call for at least twice that.
I just can’t handle things that are very sweet anymore.
If you haven’t had sugar or sweet things for years, just a little sweetener is needed!
Plus, I figure you can always add more sweetener, but you can’t remove it.
So if you try it at first and you think it’s too bitter, feel free to add sweetener until it’s at the sweetness level you want!
But like I said, I would rather start you on the conservative side!
What Protein Powder Should I Use?
I went in depth on different protein powders in my recipe for Banana Bread Protein Bites.
If you don’t have time to jump over and read about it there, here is a quick summary:
What Our Family Uses:
- Tera’s Whey – it is organic and only has 4 ingredients and is sourced from cows raised in Wisconsin!!
- Garden of Life sport protein powder – protein powder from certified grass-fed cows and the program requirements are strict!
Specific Diet Options:
- Vegan Diet – Orgain organic plant based protein or Vega protein & greens powder
- Paleo Diet – PaleoThin protein powder or PaleoPro protein powder
- AIP Diet – instead of a flavored protein powder, you will need an unflavored collagen or gelatin powder. I prefer the Great Lakes collagen. Since this recipe calls for a chocolate flavored protein powder, just add the collagen and then use an additional 1/4 cup of carob powder.
Do I Have to Use Protein Powder to Make Chocolate Avocado Pudding?
This recipe packs in extra protein with the protein powder, but it is definitely not a requirement!
I like to use it in this recipe to increase the amount of protein in my daughter’s diet.
But I also know that not everyone is a fan of protein powder or has some on hand.
Don’t worry!
You can totally make this recipe without it!
If you want to leave out the protein powder, just add an extra 1/4 cup of cacao or cocoa powder and a little more sweetener (see above for recommended amounts).
What is Cacao Powder?
While cacao powder may seem very similar to cocoa powder, they are NOT the same thing.
For more information on cacao, check out what I wrote about it in my post for the Best Hot Chocolate.
But a quick recap, cacao powder is a more raw form that is heated at lower temperatures and retains more of its health benefits.
For that reason, I recommend and list cacao powder in my recipes since it has the most health benefits of all of the chocolate powders.
But if you don’t have cacao powder, you might be wondering what you can use instead.
Can I Use Cocoa or Carob Powder Instead?
Absolutely!
The great thing about cocoa, cacao, and carob powder is that they are all interchangeable!
So use whichever one you have on hand!
